The majority of the clothing we sell is organic, natural and synthetic free (or at least contains very little) therefore fibres which are released from these items (during the washing process) are much less damaging to the marine environment as they are biodegradable. However, choosing a lifestyle which is free from animal products can sometimes mean that synthetics are an alternative. Man made materials such as fleece, polyester and acrylic, when washed can shed synthetics fibres into the rivers and seas etc which of course is not good.
All is not lost animal lovers and carers of our environment! Enter the Guppyfriend washing bag. This is a patented solution, that filters out the tiniest micro plastics released from textiles during washing.
The self-cleaning fabric bag is made from a specially designed micro-filter material which collects the shedded fibres which can then be disposed of appropriately. So this bag should be used when washing any items which have a synthetic base.
Please remember its very hard getting everything 'right' - this is not a perfect solution but it can certainly help.
To quote GUPPYFRIEND 'Our overconsumption needs to change radically, new materials, manufacturing techniques and more effective sewage treatment plants need to be developed. This might take a while. Until then your Guppyfriend washing bag is a practical and effective way to reduce plastic pollution in our rivers and oceans'
If more natural alternatives are available (which would the same job as its synthetic counterpart) it is always better to opt for those materials instead to help reduce the negative impact on our precious environment and the overall welfare of animals.
